And here we are! Thanksgiving is here and with it, the beginning of Memphis’s seemingly endless holiday season. If you’re not in a turkey coma on Thursday, there’s plenty to fill your musical plate after dinner.
Minglewood Hall is hosting a whole slew of shows Thanksgiving weekend. Perhaps the biggest name coming through is Yo Gotti with his “I Am” tour, happening Thanksgiving night (Nov. 28). Doors are at 8 p.m. and tickets are $25 + fees. All tickets will be picked up at will-call for this show! “‘I Am’ is an ad-lib I started using a few years ago,β the Memphis magnate explains. βIt fits perfectly. I am real, I am a hustler, I am the streets, I am a business man, I am a father, I am a brother, I am success.β
The following night, Minglewood hosts the North Mississippi Allstars for their annual Thanksgiving show with Lightnin’ Malcolm. Doors are at 7 p.m., tickets priced at $20 (pre-purchase) or $22 (day of) + fees. Saturday, Nov. 30, is Shangri-La Records’ 25th anniversary party with the Grifters and Ex-Cult. Some tickets can be purchased at Shangri-La, or you can find them on the Minglewood Hall site for $10. Doors are at 9 p.m.! (Bonus: the store is having a beyond Black Friday sale in celebration. Hi-Tone opens up at 9 p.m. for their annual Thanksgiving show on Nov. 28. This year’s line-up features Tanks, Special Agent Cooper and Broken Arrow. Details can be found here and the cost is $5.
For a tradition nearly as old as the bar itself, Newby’s welcomes back Super T Thursday night. Doors are at 9 p.m., tickets are $10 and the show is 21 and over. This is one of most popular Thanksgiving shows around town and the party goes all night long.
When you’re fully recovered on Friday, check out the Deli! Devil Train takes the stage at 9 p.m. Devil Train are known for their boot-stomping, beer-swilling feel-good shows at the Buccaneer every Monday night, so one can only imagine how they’ll be with a bigger stage at their fingertips.
Bonus event: Memphis Meet-up. Familiar with this band Lucero? Of course you are! Michelle Evans, creator of noted Lucero fanblog Dear Ben Nichols, is traveling to Memphis for Thanksgiving weekend. She has organized a casual meet-up of Lucero fans at the Buccaneer, after the North Mississippi All-Stars show. She promises just “some Lucero-lovin’ folks getting together and drinking some beers.”
And if you’re like most of us, Thanksgiving is the first legal day for blasting Christmas music, drinking egg nog, putting up the tree and hanging out in your red and green footie pajamas. That means you’ll need this – “Red and Green All Over” is the new Christmas single out last week from Myla Smith. It’s quirky and fun with lots of horns – the perfect soundtrack for decking your halls.
