On June 26, 14 head shops in Memphis were shut down, labelled as public nuisances by the city. Their crime? Selling synthetic drugs known as spice, which seeks to imitate weed, and charge, a synthetic cocaine. How curious that this whole scenario was foretold by HeadShop, a web series filmed and set in Memphis? The show premieres worldwide August 15.
Directed by Giri Swamy, the series follows Will, the owner of a local headshop, and eight other characters whose lives are all connected by Will’s store. And here’s a twist for you: the entire series was shot without a script. Swamy merely gave his actors a scenario and left the rest up to them. HeadShop was scored by Rick Steff and Roy Berry of Lucero, whose music can be heard throughout most of the series. Also featured are Amy LaVere, Sid Selvidge, the Kinfolk Thugs and Glorie.
HeadShop will be available to stream beginning August 15. Be on the lookout for HeadShop around town…you never know what, or who, you might find.
