Halloween is behind us, but the fall festivities continue with some great events happening in Memphis this weekend. We’ve handpicked a few that shouldn’t be missed!
Tonight at the Poplar Lounge! Myla Smith hits her hometown on the second stop of The Hiding Places Tour. Come wish her happy trails before she heads out of town again and hear Karen Choi, Alan Stockard and Jordan-Morgan Lansdowne. The show is 21+ and the cost is $7. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the music kicks off at 8:30, so before you head to the Poplar Lounge we’ve got another stop to add:
Yep, tonight is the Broad Avenue Arts Walk! Visit their site for more details, but this outdoor pop-up mini-festival goes from 5 – 10 p.m. and features tons of local art and local brews.
Tonight’s big ticket event is Bonnie Raitt appearing live at the Cannon Center. It’s her 64th birthday, so perhaps an audience sing-along is in order?
The Drive-By Truckers have done Memphis right by dutifully playing a show here roughly once a year. They always bring the house down at Minglewood Hall, where they’re playing tomorrow evening with the Old 97’s. Tickets are $25 + fees and doors open at 8 p.m. Call it a bias, but “Decoration Day” above is one of their greatest songs. They also have a penchant for swilling Jack Daniels out of the bottle onstage.
Lest we forget, the Grizzlies take on the Golden State Warriors Saturday night at the Forum. Coming off a loss to the Pelicans, let’s hope the Grizz exhibit a little grit and grind tomorrow night so we can celebrate notching another W.
Last up is a new event organized by Graham Winchester, kicking off with what we hope will be a long tradition. MISOMI, “Memphians in Support of Mental Illness,” is holding a benefit show at Newby’s. A $10 donation goes straight to the cause (NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness), and you get to see some great Memphis music. Performers include Jack Oblivian, Clay Otis, the Sheiks, Mojo Possum and Devil Train, among others. Music starts at 9 p.m. and will go early into the morning. Visit Facebook for more details.
Sunday, grab a late lunch and then head to Hi-Tone for beloved Jeffrey & the Pacemakers. They’re playing a matinee show at 4 p.m. and it’s all ages. Historically, there are always a few kids running around for this fun-loving group.
Have a good one and tweet us some pictures if you’re out catching some great live music!
